Breath test for the diagnosis of bacterial overgrowth.
Indication: SIBO-KIT is a breath test indicated for adults and children over 5 years of age with symptoms associated with intestinal microbial overgrowth, such as flatulence, meteorism, bloating and/or abdominal pain, etc.

Lactitol (and other substrates used to perform the test, such as lactulose) is not absorbed in the intestine, so it is normally used as a laxative due to its osmotic properties. However, when there is bacterial overgrowth, the microbiota present in the small intestine metabolize lactitol, generating hydrogen and/or methane gases. These are absorbed, pass into the bloodstream and are transported by the blood to the lungs, where they are eliminated with the exhaled air. Thus, an increase in the concentration of these gases in the breath after administration of lactitol at certain times indicates that it is being metabolized by the bacteria in the small intestine and, therefore, we are faced with a diagnosis of bacterial overgrowth.
